I'm having a bit of a dilemma at the moment, I'm not sure if I should continue with 'The Pig's Ear.' With all the recent crap going on in my life: Dick head landlords, working 30 hour weeks while attending full time college, money trouble due to dick head landlord, Crohns disease flare ups and possible court drama I haven't been able to update The Pig's Ear in months. I've had total writers block too but that could just be because I'm out of practice.

I'm not saying if I quit that The Pig's Ear would never return but I'm not saying that it would either. The truth is I just don't think I'm disiplined enough to make a webcomic work, I'm too easily distracted. Many web cartoonits cope with what I've gone through and more but I guess I'm just not as good as them.

So what do you think? I still enjoy it when I manage to sit down and just comic away, perhaps a break (like I haven't had one already) will give me chance to brush up my skills and then start up something new.

Oh and to those wating on free sketches, They're done, my scanner just fucked up and I haven't been able to scan them. If you want to wait a teensy bit longer you can even have them all coloured with marker goodness.

Cheers dA

*Edit - Thanks guys, I think a break is the way to go. I'll try and find time to perfect my process. I'll try and update dA with more than just my college work and I'm sure the odd sketch will appear.

Thanks for all the comments!

Rules :
01 - You must post these rules
02 - Each tagged person must post 10 things about themselves on their journal
03 - You have to choose and tag 10 people and post their icons on the same journal
04 - Go to their pages and tell them you tagged them
05 - No tag backs
06 - No crap in the tagging section about "you are tagged if you read this". You legitimately have to tag 10 peoples

1. I have a slightly deformed left pinky toe. It's kind of squashed and has a toenail that looks like it was about to split and be two toenails. When I was born I was two weeks early so I was taken away to be checked over. The Doctor then returned to my Mum (who hadn't seen me yet) and asked if there was any history of deformity  in the family. I want to shake that man by the hand.

2. I have tried on three separate occasions to read The Lord of The Rings but I just quite manage it. I don't bloody care that Frodo is off to sell his house! Bring on the sodding orcs already!

3. Because I share my dA name with Cyril people assume that I am a heavy drinker like he is. I actually rarely drink and I don't like being drunk. Probably proof I'm getting old.

4. I don't watch TV. It's not out of some pretentious TV is crap but rather in a previous flat I could not get a TV signal and I kind of got used to watching shows online or buying DVD box sets. Also this way I don't have to pay for a TV licence (for the non-UK folks out there in the UK if you want to watch TV as it's broadcast you have to pay the TV licence. This funds the BBC.)

5. I'm very much a sceptic. I don't believe in magic, Tarot, psychics etc. Because I write a lot of fantasy stuff people are often surprised by this.

6. I am short sighted in my right eye and long sighted in my left eye.

7. I really wish I'd taken at least one other science at school. I really like knowing how stuff works, I have a bad habit of reeling off stuff I think might be true as if it is fact (when it comes to science anyway.)

8. I am very very VERY bad with numbers. I often stand confused when trying to do basic arithmetic, the weird part is that I was quite good at algebra at school.

9. I'm really bad for keeping stuff I don't really need anymore. I still have an old broken Xbox kicking around.

10. I dislike Snow.

I disregard rule six! I can't be bothered tagging people, this just seemed a good way to get back in touch with dA.

Right, I haven't drawn anything in over a month and I really want to get back into the swing of things.

So I figured some free sketches were in order to give me a little motivation. The first five people to leave a comment on this journal will get a sketch. Once I've done thosefive I will probably do some more so no worries if you don't make it.

Anything goes as long as it's basically not porn or racist the usual stuff I'm sure you sensible people would avoid.

1. :iconiamshadowstrike1: Just waiting on what
2. :iconzeikier: Watro the Water monster fella
3. :iconnerinokukai: FIN!
4. :iconexoldier: Wants one...but I don't know what yet...
5. :iconcharanty: Again...dunno but a sketch shall be done!

Happy Commenting!

Good God you lot are quick! I will do more at some point but just let me get through these for now.

I'm starting to realise that most of my journals are me apologising for my absence but good GOD I've got a good reason.

If you read my last journal where I apologised for not being around you'll notice I had just moved flat, well guess what, I MOVED AGAIN! Turns out my previous landlord was illegally subletting to us, he was renting the place from his Mum and didn't tell his Mum that he was subletting the place out. Of course she was pissed when she came to visit her son and see all this stuff she didn't recognise (she appeared while we were out) and so wanted us out.

This is where it gets fun: Under Scottish law he was legally obliged to end our tenancy so yes we had to leave, however there are certain procedures that need to be observed in order for the eviction to be legal. He didn't do any of them. We should have been given a written notice to quit of no less than 28 days, while we were given a month to leave we were never given any formal written notice making the eviction illegal. On top of that my flatmate was receiving texts from our landlord as early as three days after asking us to leave asking if we had a moving out date!

Now if all that was not enough it also turns out that neither him or his Mum are registered with the local authority as landlords for the property. By law in Scotland you need to be registered as a landlord for every property you wish to rent.

I am STILL waiting for my deposit back despite having been moved out for more than 2 weeks and already giving the keys back.

Needless to say we're taking him to court if he hasn't paid by the 29th.

This is why I've been so absent and why the Pigs Ear has pretty much been on hold for what feels like forever. Anyway, that's been my passed month or so, how are you?

After three weeks with no internet and having to rely on the college macs for internet access (which have deviant art blocked, which is a pain) I finally have the internet in my new flat!

So how have yo been dA? Anything new? I'll upload some of my more recent college work too for you all to take a gander at, something a little different to my usual cartoonry.

Right, time to get some doodling done, it's good to be back.

Its been a rough few weeks for me so I'm asking for a guest strip...or possibly two for pigsearonline.com while I get moved into my new flat.

If you fancy it send a strip to munro.craig@gmail.com in either jpg or png format no bigger than 950 pixels wide.

I AM ZOMBIE JONES!

Sat Nov 20, 2010, 2:32 PM
I don't know how many of you have been following ~BlackLillian's masque OCT (although `Endling has taken the helm to help out lil) but if you have then you may be aware of ~ZombieJones

Well it's me.

That's why you haven't seen so much of me lately.

I was unable to finish the 4th round versus ~Templar-Raven (something I am GUTTED about because he deserved a much better showing than I managed). He now goes to the final round versus ~LadyPennny which promises to be awesome beyond reckoning!

I had great fun with masque, I've met a whole host of great people and I really enjoyed trying to alter my style (I'm not sure how successful I was). This won't be the last you see of Jones or Timmy, I've got lots of ideas of what to do with these two so keep an eye out.

Hi dA! I'm really still here, honest!

Well, anyway, down to business. I'm going to be starting college as well as my second part time job in a few weeks so I thought I'd take the load off of myself a little and ask for guest strips (and who nows, maybe finally make myself that buffer of strips I keep telling myself I'd do). Anyway, if you fancy giving it a go then drop me a line here or on munro.craig@gmail.com

I decided to put a deadline on this puppy Thursday 26th August I've got one finished strip already and I've seen a VERY nice WIP. If I get enough guest strips you may even get two strips a week for the guest strips!

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with guys.

Who Wants a Wii?

Mon Jun 28, 2010, 5:51 AM
I'm a little short on the cash front and its been months since I even played the bastard thing (except to use BBC iPlayer to watch Doctor Who).

So I'm shamelessly whoring here on dA :-D check out my link here to eBay (UK residents only, sneding consoles and such abroad costs a small fortune). It comes with a bucket load of extra stuff and all the virtual console I've downloaded.

Ok I'm back

Thu May 20, 2010, 10:28 AM
Hi folks. I'm back in aberdeen after the service. Needless to say I got pretty weepy, especially as my Dad, Uncle, Brother and I were the ones to carry in the coffin (something I wasn't expecting).

Thanks for all your kind words guys.

On another note I'm going to try and make more of an effort on dA, it seems all I've done lately is submit the Pig's Ear and I'm even pretty irregular at that! I've also let a lot of my dA friendships slide and I'm feel pretty bad about that.

I've been pretty busy but I'm not going to let that be an excuse anymore. IMAH COMIN BACK DA!

Webcomics: My thoughts

Tue Feb 9, 2010, 9:59 AM

I love webcomics.

Not much of a surprise there to be honest, I mean here I am trying my hardest to create one (I'll leave the measure of success of that up to you good people...all five you). The following are my thoughts on a few webcomics that I frequent in my morning webcomic perusal.

PVP – Scott Kurtz

I'm sure most of you have heard of PVP and Scott Kurtz. PVP is up here on my list because it's one of the first webcomics I started reading once I had regular access to the internet. My comic “Halls” owes a lot to PVP and it got me excited about drawing comics again (I was in a bit of an artistic slump at the time.)

A quick overview of the comic: PVP centres around the day-to-day happenings and misadventures of the staff of PVP magazine (a fictional video games magazine). Cue pop culture references aplenty, a big blue troll and a homicidal panda and you have PVP.

Hanna Is Not A Boys Name – Tessa Stone

Now I've only recently caught on to this little gem and I already LOVE IT! Hanna Falk Cross (who seems to look like me, only ginger and with spiky hair) is an inept paranormal investigator aided by his zombie mate “...” (he has no name...he forgot) and a cast of supernatural drop outs. In her own words its “Sugar-coated horror comedy” and I think that suits  the comic to a tee.

It's relatively early days but the story is shaping up nicely there's enough intrigue without getting too cliched although there is a little danger as both Hanna and “...” seem to have mysterious pasts but from the writing so far I'm confident this is a danger that will be avoided.

Now for the REALLY impressive part of this glorious bit of comicry: The layout. That might seem a bit weird but Tessa doesn't seem to confine herself to the standard square panel, another square panel oooh rectangular panel that other comics seem to do (myself included, my own layouts are DULL). Here is someone who clearly thrives off experimenting and having fun with the medium and it shows.

Least I Could Do/Looking for Group – Ryan Sohmer and Lar Desouza

I've included these as one because I am a lazy man and would probably end up repeating myself anyway (this is another couple of comics I'm pretty sure you've heard of anyway). First off you have Looking for Group to thank for Cyril being dragged kicking and screaming into the likes of SdA and other OCT's  (and of course me finally reviving The Pig's Ear.)

Ryan and Lar are the true workhorses of the webcomics world. Not only is Least I Could Do updated every single day, in full colour with a big shiny Sunday strip but Looking for Group updates twice a week too!

Least I Could Do centres around Raine Summers, womaniser extraordinaire and those closest to him. Another comic choc full of references to pop culture (can you see a trend in what I like?) but also manages to throw in a moment to make you go “Daaawww!” (I dare you to try and not feel warm and fuzzy with the interactions between Raine and his niece Ashley.)

Looking For Group seems to originally have been a WoW parody but over time has developed into so much more. There is a real epic story happening here about Cale An'non's rise to (possible) greatness. However far and away the greatest thing is Richard the Warlock how you can make a homicidal zombie wizard man thing so cuddly and lovable I can't quite work out.

Starslip – Kris Straub

Starslip is very interesting for a number of reasons. The first and most obvious is the distinctive art style although my only problem with it is that everyone looks very much the same. The second is how Kris handled the revamp of the strip. Rather than simply alter his art style he managed to work it into the canon of the strip. One of the major plot points of the strip is that “Starslip” drives get you across the universe by putting you in an alternate universe where you're already where you're already there. It turns out that there are a lot of problems with this and I won't go into details (if you want to know go read the archives!) Due to a war with the future and the dangers of starslip travel (again...archives) the main cast are sent to another dimension where starslip drives are decommissioned several years before the events that occur in their own dimension and so TADA! The events so far are not quite done away with, Vanderbeam and co still remember these events and certain things have changed in their new universe. One moment that sticks in my mind is when Ensign Holiday finds out that in the new universe she was engaged but of course she has no memories of this.

The other major draw of Starslip actually has nothing to do with the actual strip and a lot to do with why I've suddenly written a HUGE blog after months of bloglessness. It's that Kris Straub often blogs about varying interesting subjects. Now I don't just mean “I went to the coffee shop today” (although he does of course blog about that sort of thing occasionally) but more often than not its about some weird science article, an interesting observation in science fiction or recently a comparison between 2001: A Space Odyssey and 2010: The year we made contact.

So those are my thoughts on a few comics I read every morning (there are a few more but this is getting pretty long). Excuse the poor grammar (God I hope I spelled grammar correctly) but I'm a little rusty with words that aren't hovering over peoples head. If you've got any thoughts on any of these comics or some others then by all means voice your opinions!

I finally bought it today while looking for Xmas presents. I've played through the dead centre campaign on single player and had a blast (I wanted to get a feel for the game before I went online).

So far I'm enjoying it just as much as the first game, although it feels more like an expansion than a true sequel. I don't kind much however as it was on special offer so I couldn't really pass it up.

So my dA pals, look out for me on steam! My steam account is CyrilTheWizard (aren't I original?)

:icontiiara: I demand you give this man some love. Go on now. Big messy love if you can.

I logged on and discovered that this wonderful human being has given me a sub. I'm a happy man. I will now try and make a cool journal skin or a CSS or something (anyone who knows good ways to go about this feel free to enlighten me). Anyway, I have IDD prizes, Pigs Ear and Christmas presents I should probably be doing right now.

Thats right folks the guests strips have begun over at pigsearonline.com www.pigsearonline.com . Though I'll admit I was forced to use one a few weeks back thanks to work.

If you'd still like to send a guest strip go ahead. If I get lots I can just update more than weekly for a little while, plus I can play dragon age for longer.

Guest strip guide lines:

No more than 960 pixels wide.

PNG and JPEG format only.

As for the rest...anything goes, have fun with it :-D
  • Mood: Wow!
Yup, its that time at last. Time for the guest strips. Get them in tomorrow or ASAP and the guest strip run will begin as of this Thursday. The sooner you get you strip in the higher up the list you will be! Lets move people!
  • Mood: Wow!
That kind of crept up on you didn't it? well to be honest the stroy arc isn't done yet so I'm going to add another 2 weeks. If you have a comic reasy however I'd still LOVE to see it. Remember to send your guest comics either in a note to me here on dA or via email to munro.craig@gmail.com no wider than 960 pixels and PNG or JPEG format.

New deadline 24th November
  • Mood: Wow!
Ok people, I'm making a real effort to try and improve my comicing, on ALL levels. That means art, layout, writing, the whole kit and kaboodle. So what I'm doing is opening up my gallery as well as pigsearonline.com www.pigsearonline.com to your utmost scrutiny. I have some good ideas of what I need to work on but I'd like to see what I've missed from people with a more objective eye.

So, look through the gallery, the webcomic site whatever you like and help me, uh, help me

(Also if you are doing a guest strip remember the deadline is November 10th)
